HPDT-Counsel Roundtable
The HPDT-Counsel Roundtable is a twice-annual meeting of select professionals who are connected with the Health Professions Discipline Tribunals. The purpose of these meetings is to generate feedback and discussion from a variety of stakeholders, including HPDT leadership representatives from each of the colleges, and counsel who regularly represent the prosecution, the defence or complainants. Discussions may range from HPDT processes to rules of procedure to practice directions.

TERMS OF REFERENCE

The mandate of the HPDT-Counsel Roundtable (HCR) is to function as a forum for the HPDT and the participant colleges to consult with and obtain feedback from those who practise before the HPDT tribunals regarding processes, practices, rules of procedure and practice directions.

The HCR’s focus is on the effectiveness of the HPDT and its processes. The HCR is not a forum for the discussion of the merits of individual cases, issues of substantive law, jurisprudence or college processes other than those of the HPDT.

The HCR shall be composed of the following members:

OMTDT Manager/Tribunal Counsel
College Representatives -
one person involved in the prosecution of discipline matters selected by each of the participating colleges

one person selected by Steinecke Maciura LaBlanc

one person selected by WeirFoulds LLP
Defence Representatives -
one person selected by the Canadian Medical Protective Association

up to ten people who regularly represent registrants, selected by the HPDT Chair
Complainant Representative -
one person who regularly represents complainants, selected by the HPDT Chair

An alternate member may be designated to attend in place of any member who is unavailable.

The HCR will meet at least twice a year.

The agenda for each meeting will be set by the HPDT Chair, after soliciting proposed agenda items from HCR members.

In order that the HCR may function in an atmosphere that encourages candour, members will maintain reasonable discretion and confidentiality with respect to HCR discussions.

No minutes or votes will be taken at HCR meeting.
