The Ontario Physicians and Surgeons Discipline Tribunal is a neutral, independent, administrative tribunal that hears and decides allegations of professional misconduct and related matters through a formal, court-like hearing process.

The Tribunal sits in panels of five, each of which includes two physicians, two public members, and an experienced adjudicator. The experienced adjudicator chairs the panel and prepares the first draft of the written reasons.

We are seeking several CPSO registrants to join the Tribunal. This part-time remunerated position requires a commitment of 10-20 days per year, which varies depending on the Tribunal’s caseload. Hearings are conducted virtually and are scheduled based on members’ availability.

Appointments are one-year terms, with the possibility of re-appointment; the maximum term length on the Tribunal is nine years.

Qualifications:

  • registrant of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
  • eligible for appointment under s. 7.3 of the CPSO By-laws
  • aptitude for learning and applying legal concepts
  • aptitude for impartial, collegial decision making in the public interest
  • ability to take detailed notes during hearings
  • strong attention to detail and ability to make constructive comments on others’ writing
  • ability to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, SharePoint and Zoom
  • ability to conduct hearings in French is an asset
  • experience as an adjudicator is an asset

Successful applicants commit to:

  • sign an annual Declaration of Adherence and Code of Conduct.
  • apply our core values of excellence, openness, respect and timeliness in all Tribunal work
  • attend 18-20 hours of virtual orientation upon appointment
  • attend two full-day in-person education sessions per year in Toronto
  • be available for at least four half-day virtual hearings and at least two multi-day virtual hearings per year, scheduled based on the Tribunal member’s available dates
  • prepare thoroughly for hearings
  • review and comment promptly on draft reasons
  • respond promptly to emails
  • have an available private space to attend virtual hearings
  • keep all non-public information strictly confidential
